A few years ago, you could be forgiven for thinking that board games fell into a few simple categories. There were the Monopoly like games, Scrabble, kids board games and Trivial Persuit. If you dug around, you might have come up with a few specialist games such as Kings & Things, but that was about as far as it went. Well, now things have changed for the better, with a huge range of games on the market to suit all tastes and ages. Perhaps the most obvious game at the moment is the Lord of the Rings boardgame, designed by a veteran games man, Reiner Knizier.
So, what are the options??
The Settlers of Catan is a great introduction to these new board games. Its a game for 3-4 players (but can be expanded to 5-6 players with an additional item) that takes a few hours to play. It involves exploring an island, building villages, cities, roads and armies and trading resources with your opponents. The board is made of hexagonal tiles which are layed out in a 'random' way to form the island. This means the game board is never the same twice, and thus games never pan out the same way twice! Dice are used to determine where resources come from, so an element of randomness is involved.
If you want to broaden your games playing, then you could go for VINCI, a 3-6 player game of conquest and empire building. Its a really good game that you can get hooked on. We have heard it described as Ultimate Risk.... but that doesn't do it justice.
The Lord of the Rings game is a departure from the norm... players need to work together to beat the game rather than each other. Its hard to master but great fun (2-5 players) to play. You play a group of hobbits out to get the ring back to Mount Doom. The game plays Sauron, out to stop you. A clever system of dice rolling determines how Sauron 'works' to stop you, and your game descisions greatly effect the outcome. As you get more proficient, you can make the game harder by changing where Sauron starts in the game. One to recommend!
