About Dungeons and Dragons

dungeons and dragons 3rd editionIt all started many years ago with a simple version of what became Basic Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). Then followed Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D) which greatly expanded on the game but brought with it layers of rules that lacked consistency. The 2nd Edition added yet more layers and brought together additional material published in Dragon and Dungeon magazines. Now we have 3rd Edition (D&D3E), and a complete re-write from the ground up.

Along the way, we have seen many official worlds created for the game. From the Grand Duchy and Greyhawk settings of old through the Forgotten Realms and the fantastic Dragonlance worlds of the late Eighties to the lands of Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Birthright and laterly the wonderful Planescape setting.

So much detail and background is amazing, and thats just part of the official list....

So, we end up with D&D3E. Is that the end of the line then? Well no, it isnt. As part of their push to regain lost D&Ders, Wizards of the Coast (who took over from TSR) have gone and made the core system mechanics available free of charge to just about anyone who wants to develop material to support the system. Just look around at the shelves and you will see adventures and supplements from many different companies. Some are sleek well produced items that inspire your games, some are poor imitations of the (best left forgotten) past.

roleplaying support material for dungeons and dragonsHow does this effect the hobby? Well, for one thing it makes it cheap and easy to produce support material that conforms to the system everyone is playing. It should result in a wide range and choice of material, and it should continue to rouse interest in the hobby. It appears that Wizards have targeted the computer games players too. Take a look at the graphics in the new core books, they have that computer look to them (and they are stunning for the most part). Who knows if this is deliberate, but it works for me!

We hope the new production values are applied accross the range, from rules and adventures to magazines and resources. There are some great items out there, like the Forgotten Realms interactive CD atlas (never be short of a map again), and if these items are given the D&D3E glossy treatment, they will enhance the game no end.

If you want to know more about the game, visit the Wizards D&D site. There are some great historic downloads available (old modules and supplements you thought you would never see again!) as well as news, views and resources aplenty.

dungeons and dragons into adventureYou can buy the introduction box set if you are new to roleplaying, complete with simple rules, pre-designed characters, dungeon layout, monster counters and the all important funny shaped dice! We dont recommend this to experienced players, as its a bit simplistic.

Dont forget, Wizards of the Coast also produce a line of best selling novels based on the D&D theme. Get some great background and new ideas for your campaigns, or simply enjoy them as a cracking good read in their own right!

d20 Mini Modules - new from Alderac Entertainment, the people who bring you 7th Sea Roleplaying Game

d20 adventures for Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition from Alderac EntertainmentThe d20 open licence has produced a flood of modules from many companies. Alderac have joined in too, but with a new slant on the idea. After carrying out exhaustive surveys, they found a large number of people who buy adventures rarely use everything in the product, but just take the bits they can add to existing campaigns. Thus the mini module idea was born. Short, cheap, easy to run self contained adventures that can be slipped into existing campaigns easily.

Each of the eight current modules has an adventure introducing a new monster, spell and or magic item. You can choose from classic dungeon encounters to wilderness expeditions, temple jaunts to city based settings, extra planar excursions or forgotten castles filled with mystery, and all for a few quid!!

Well, give them a go! Available online now, or from your local stockist.
